Multi-Stage Distance Test

The audio track of the Beep Test or sometimes called the Multi-Stage Fitness Test is a familiar sound to many people from high school gym class, but the test is also often used to test professional athlete's cardiovascular fitness. Pairing this particular audio with the view looking out a moving train associates the awareness of distance traveled (the view of the forest passing) versus the time elapsed (intervals of the beeps).  We imagine ourselves moving at a certain rate and a certain distance even through a darkened tunnel. But as the video progresses, time spent in the tunnel gets shortened, shortening either the perceived distance or speeding up the rate of passing through it.  Looking sideways out of a train, we only perceive what is beside us in the present moment, not having the anticipation of things to come as when you are looking ahead while moving.  This gives a heightened sensation of moving along a path between two points, neither forwards or backwards. Moving through landscapes, we are always unconsciously negotiating our positions and movements in relation to our perceptions. This impulsive measuring can settle into a meditative position.
